In the Gospel, Christ proclaims: “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy” (Matthew 5:7). These sacred words shine like a lamp for the faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, who, with love and sacrifice, continue to reach across an ocean to embrace the suffering people of Ukraine.
From the towns and villages of Donetsk, displaced people arrive with heavy hearts and empty hands. Some are elderly women who have lost their homes to shelling. Others are young mothers carrying infants, their eyes weary with fear and sleepless nights. Children cling to their parents, too young to understand war, yet already burdened by its consequences.
It is to these suffering brothers and sisters that the Church responds. In the city of Samar, a humble humanitarian hub operates like a lifeline of mercy. There, and on the dusty roads of war-torn villages, Very Rev. Fr. Kostyantyn Kuznetsov, his wife Natalia, and their son Dmytro serve tirelessly, not only distributing food, hygiene products, and medicine, but also giving hope through prayer, encouragement, and human presence.
“Every person we meet is a story of loss, but also a story of faith,” Fr. Kostyantyn shares. “A mother who fled with nothing but her children, an old man who lost his home and his strength, a child who only wants a bowl of soup. We serve them not because it is easy, but because Christ commands us to love without measure. Mercy is our responsibility, and mercy is stronger than war.”
The arrival of cold weather makes an already dire situation unbearable. With homes destroyed and infrastructure crippled, families face the bitter chill without heating, electricity, or proper shelter. To ease their suffering, the UOC of the USA has provided blankets, pillows, and heaters - items that mean the difference between life and death on freezing nights.
“Each blanket we send is more than fabric,” Archbishop Daniel explains. “It is a message from the Body of Christ across the ocean: You are not forgotten. You are loved. You are part of us. This is how God’s grace touches the world - through simple, compassionate acts that carry His eternal warmth.”
The Church also remembers the defenders of Ukraine who stand guard on the front lines. Through military chaplain, Rev. Fr. Yaroslav Volkovytsky, packages of coffee, tea, sweets, and even cola were delivered to soldiers. These small comforts remind them of home, offering a moment of normalcy in the midst of hardship.
“It may seem like just a bar of chocolate or a cup of coffee,” Archbishop Daniel said, “but for the soldier in a trench, it is also a prayer, a blessing, and a reminder that he is not alone. We send not just food, but love, and with that love, strength.”
Perhaps the most moving testimony of this mission came in a simple grocery store. A group of children approached the Church volunteers and asked timidly if food could be bought for them. Instead of reaching for sweets or soda, the young boy carefully chose cabbage, carrots, and other simple ingredients for borscht. Then, almost embarrassed, he asked for milk for his little sister.
Fr. Kostyantyn recalls: “In that moment, I saw purity and sacrifice. A child, thinking not of himself, but of his sister. He did not ask for candy, but for soup. This is what war has done—but it is also what faith does: it teaches love even in hunger.”
The Church provided not only the milk, but meat, hygiene items, and, yes, some treats as well. They also sent packages of baby formula, diapers, and food to two more families in desperate need.
“Glory to God,” Archbishop Daniel thanked Fr. Kostyantyn and his team, “that we were there at that exact moment. Glory to God that He allows us to be His hands. For every child we serve, every family we touch, Christ Himself is present. Whatever you did for the least of these, you did for Me (Matthew 25:40).”
Every day, despite constant shelling and the risk of death, the Church’s social service team continues its mission. Packages are sent out, distributions are made, and prayers are offered. To some, it may seem impossible. To the Church, it is simply obedience to the Gospel.
“We work for the sake of people, and we work for Victory,” Fr. Kostyantyn says with resolve. Victory not only for Ukraine, but for love over hate, for light over darkness, for faith over despair.
This mission is possible only through the prayers and generosity of the faithful of the UOC of USA and its friends. From parish children who collected coins, to elderly parishioners who donated from their pensions, to whole parishes organizing drives - the Body of Christ has acted as one.
Metropolitan Antony offers heartfelt thanks: “Every blanket, every package of food, every toy for a child has behind it the sacrifice of a parishioner in America. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Because of you, the Church is alive, love is alive, and mercy is alive. You are Christ’s answer to someone’s desperate prayer.”
“Do not grow weary in doing good,” Archbishop Daniel urges, “for in due season we shall reap, if we do not lose heart” (Galatians 6:9).
Through the Cross, through mercy, through love - we shall see Resurrection.
Любов сильніша за війну: Гуманітарна місія УПЦ США
У Євангелії Христос проголошує: «Блаженні милостиві, бо вони помилувані будуть» (Мф. 5:7). Ці святі слова сяють як світильник для вірних Української Православної Церкви США (УПЦ США), які з любов’ю та жертовністю простягають руку допомоги через океан до стражденного народу України.
Із міст і сіл Донеччини прибувають переселенці з важкими серцями та порожніми руками. Одні - це літні жінки, які втратили домівки під обстрілами. Інші - молоді матері з немовлятами на руках, утомленими від страху та безсонних ночей очима. Діти туляться до батьків - надто малі, щоб зрозуміти війну, але вже зранені її наслідками.
Саме до цих стражденних братів і сестер звертається Церква. У місті Самар діє скромний гуманітарний хаб, який став рятівною артерією милосердя. Там і на дорогах розбитих війною сіл невтомно служать прот. Костянтин Кузнецов, його дружина Наталія та син Дмитро. Вони не лише роздають їжу, ліки та засоби гігієни, а й дарують надію через молитву, добре слово і присутність поруч.
«Кожна людина, яку ми зустрічаємо, - це історія втрати, але й історія віри, - ділиться о. Костянтин. - Мати, що втекла тільки з дітьми; дідусь, який втратив дім і сили; дитина, що мріє лише про тарілку супу. Ми служимо не тому, що це легко, а тому що Христос заповідав любити без міри. Милосердя - це наш обов’язок, і милосердя сильніше за війну».
Прихід холодів робить і так жахливу ситуацію нестерпною. Зруйновані будинки й знищена інфраструктура залишили сім’ї без тепла, світла і захисту від морозу. Щоб полегшити страждання, УПЦ США надсилає ковдри, подушки та обігрівачі - речі, що буквально рятують життя у холодні ночі.
«Кожна ковдра, яку ми надсилаємо, - це більше, ніж тканина, - пояснює архієпископ Даниїл. - Це послання від Тіла Христового через океан: Вас не забули. Вас люблять. Ви - частина нас. Так діє благодать Божа у світі - через прості й співчутливі вчинки, що несуть Його вічне тепло».
Церква пам’ятає і про оборонців України на передовій. Через військового капелана о. Ярослава Волковицькогобуло передано пакунки з кавою, чаєм, солодощами та навіть колою. Ці маленькі радощі нагадують воїнам про дім і дарують хвилини звичайності серед важких випробувань.
«Може здатися, що це просто плитка шоколаду чи чашка кави, - говорить архієпископ Даниїл, - але для воїна в окопі це також молитва, благословення і нагадування: ти не сам. Ми передаємо не тільки їжу, а й любов, а з любов’ю - силу».
Найзворушливішим свідченням місії стала зустріч у звичайному магазині. До волонтерів підійшли діти й несміливо попросили купити їм їсти. Замість солодощів чи газованих напоїв хлопчик обрав капусту, моркву та інші прості інгредієнти для борщу. Потім, майже соромлячись, попросив ще молока для молодшої сестрички.
Отець Костянтин згадує: «У цю мить я побачив чистоту і жертвенність. Дитина, яка думає не про себе, а про сестру. Він не попросив цукерок, а попросив суп. Це зробила війна, але й віра зробила своє: навчила любові навіть у голоді».
Церква придбала не тільки молоко, а й м’ясо, засоби гігієни і, звичайно, ласощі. Додатково відправили пакунки з дитячим харчуванням, підгузками та продуктами ще двом родинам.
«Слава Богові, - подякував архієпископ Даниїл о. Костянтину та його команді, - що саме в цю хвилину ми були поруч. Слава Богові, що Він дозволяє нам бути Його руками. Бо в кожній дитині, якій ми допомагаємо, у кожній родині, яку ми підтримаємо, присутній Сам Христос. Що ви зробили одному з найменших братів Моїх - те Мені зробили (Мф. 25:40)».
Попри щоденні обстріли і небезпеку смерті, соціальна команда Церкви продовжує свою працю. Пакунки вирушають, роздачі проводяться, молитви лунають. Для когось це здається неможливим. Для Церкви - це лише вірність Євангелію.
«Ми працюємо заради людей і заради Перемоги, - рішуче каже о. Костянтин. - Перемоги не лише України, а й любові над ненавистю, світла над темрявою, віри над відчаєм».
Ця місія можлива лише завдяки молитвам і жертовності вірних УПЦ США та друзів Церкви. Від дітей, які збирали монетки, до літніх парафіян, що жертвували зі своєї пенсії, до цілих парафій, які організовували акції - Тіло Христове діяло як єдине.
Митрополит Антоній щиро дякує: «Кожна ковдра, кожен пакунок їжі, кожна іграшка для дитини - за ними стоїть жертва парафіянина в Америці. Дякую вам від щирого серця. Завдяки вам Церква живе, любов живе, і милосердя живе. Ви є Христовою відповіддю на чиюсь відчайдушну молитву».
«Не втомлюйтеся чинити добро, - закликає архієпископ Даниїл, - бо своєчасно пожнемо, якщо не ослабнемо» (Гал. 6:9).
Через Хрест, через милосердя, через любов - ми побачимо Воскресіння.
