Let’s Light a Candle of Hope: A Call to Prayer on the National Day of Prayer

On Thursday, May 7^th we mark the 68^th anniversary of establishment of the National Day of Prayer in the United States of America, which annually invites people to pray for their nation. It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman.

Year after year, on this one particular day (first Thursday of May), people throughout the country join their voices together in uttering the intercessory prayers to Almighty God for the protection of the United States of America, country which was birthed in prayer and in reverence for God.

Annually, this day brings hundreds and thousands of faithful to their sacred temples for the moment of prayer and reflection. It is also a call to all Americans to humbly come together before God in order to seek his blessings and guidance for every aspect of our lives.

The National Day of Prayer has great significance for us, as it enables us to recall and to teach the way in which our founding fathers sought the wisdom of God when faced with critical decisions. It stands as a call for us to humbly come before God, seeking His guidance for our leaders and His grace upon us as a people. The unanimous passage of the bill establishing the National Day of Prayer as an annual event, signifies that prayer is as important to our nation today as it was in the beginning.

This year, the National Day of Prayer is of even greater importance, as we battle the COVID-19 pandemic. Because of social-distancing guidelines we will not be able to be at our local sacred church buildings together, but everyone is encouraged to join us in the National Prayer on Thursday evening at 9PM (EST) via Live-Stream Evening Prayer Service from St. Andrew the First-Called Ukrainian Orthodox Memorial Church (South Bound Brook, NJ) on Facebook page of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA.

In addition, we ask you to join us in lighting a candle at 9PM (EST) in the windows of your homes as a visible symbol of the Light of Life - our Risen Savior Jesus Christ.

Moreover, we ask Parish Pastors and Parish Boards of Administration of our Church communities across the country to ring the Church Bells of your parish temples at exactly 9PM (EST) in order to join us in one single prayer for our Nation – the United States of America.

Praying together as people of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA we shall ask the Almighty God healing for all who are unwell, wisdom for those whose work is halting the spread of coronavirus, and strength for all of us.

More than ever, may we unite our hearts this year in fervent prayerful glorification of the Almighty God and a single petition for the healing of the physical, moral and social infirmities by which we have been affected.

Засвітімо Свічку Надії: заклик до молитви в Національний День Молитви

У четвер, 7 травня, ми відзначаємо 68-ту річницю встановлення Національного Дня Молитви у Сполучених Штатах Америки, який щороку запрошує населення країни молитися за свою батьківщину. Цей день був заснований у 1952 році спільною резолюцією Конгресу США та підписаний в закон президентом Гаррі С. Труменом.

Рік за роком, в цей день (перший четвер травня), люди по всій країні єднаються у молитві до Всемогутнього Бога за захист Сполучених Штатів Америки, країни, яка була виплекана в молитві та шануванні Бога.

Щорічно цей день збирає сотні та тисячі вірних до своїх храмів на хвилину молитви та роздумів. Це також заклик до всіх американців смиренно зібратися перед Богом, щоб шукати його благословення та настанови для кожного аспекту нашого життя.

Національний день молитви має для нас велике значення, оскільки він дозволяє нам згадати та навчитися кроків, якими засновники країни шукали мудрості Божої, стикаючись з критичними рішеннями того часу. Цей день є закликом до нас смиренно прийти перед Богом, шукаючи Його благословення для наших лідерів та нас - Його людей. Одностайне прийняття законопроекту про встановлення Національного Дня Молитви як щорічної події означає, що молитва є такою ж важливою для нашої нації сьогодні, як і була в час заснування США.

Цього року Національний День Молитви набуває ще більшого значення, оскільки ми боремося з пандемією COVID-19. Через суспільні обмеження пов'язані із коронавірусом, ми не зможемо бути разом у наших місцевих священних церковних будівлях, але всіх запрошуємо приєднатися до нас у Національній Молитві у четвер ввечері о 21:00 (EST) у прямому ефірі із Української Православної церкви-пам'ятника св. Андрія Первозванного (Савт Бавнд Брук, штат Н. Дж.) на сторінці у Facebook Української Православної Церкви США.

Крім того, ми просимо вас приєднатися до запалення свічки о 9:00 (EST) у вікнах ваших будинків, як видимого символу Світла Життя - нашого Воскреслого Спасителя Ісуса Христа.

Більше того, ми просимо священнослужителів парафіяльних громад та членів парафіяльних управ наших церковних громад по всій країні одночасно включити церковні дзвони ваших парафіяльних храмів о 21:00 (EST), щоб приєднатися до нас в одній молитві за нашу країну - Сполучені Штати Америки.

Молячись разом, як вірні Української Православної Церкви США, ми проситимемо Всемогутнього Бога зцілення для всіх недужих, мудрості для тих, чия праця зупиняє поширення коронавірусу, і сили для всіх нас.

Ми можемо, як ніколи, об’єднати свої серця цього року у гарячому молитовному прославленні Всемогутнього Бога та єдиному усердному проханні про зцілення фізичних, моральних та соціальних немочей, котрі торкнулися нашого щоденного життя.
