By the grace of God, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the United States of America gathered in solemn prayer and hopeful remembrance, marking the 39th anniversary of the Chornobyl Nuclear Disaster - one of the most tragic chapters in modern human history and in the suffering of the Ukrainian people.

Presiding over the sacred commemoration, His Eminence Archbishop Daniel, spiritual father of the Western Eparchy and President of the Consistory, led the celebration of the Eucharistic Divine Liturgy at St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Memorial Church - the spiritual heart of the UOC of the USA. Clergy from neighboring parish communities in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania joined the faithful in profound prayer for the healing of Ukraine, a land still deeply wounded by history’s disasters and by the ongoing brutal war unleashed by Russian aggression.

Nearly four decades after that catastrophic day - April 26, 1986 - when Reactor No. 4 at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant exploded, releasing invisible death into the skies of Ukraine and Europe, the Church stands resilient: witnessing, remembering, and proclaiming life over death, hope over despair.

In his stirring homily, Archbishop Daniel reflected: "Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ. Today, we not only remember a terrible accident; we remember a call from God — a call to responsibility, to stewardship, and to repentance. Chornobyl teaches us that when humanity abuses the gifts entrusted to it - when power is used without humility and technology without morality - creation itself groans in pain. Yet even amid devastation, God’s mercy shines brighter than any darkness. We are a people of Resurrection - and even from the ashes of Chornobyl, new life can, and must, arise."

Throughout the Liturgy, numerous faithful approached the Holy Chalice, partaking of the precious Body and Blood of Christ - an act of healing, sanctification, and renewal. In these sacred moments, the scars of Chornobyl, of war, of exile, and of suffering were united to the wounds of Christ, that they might be transfigured by His Resurrection.

At the conclusion of the Divine Service, Archbishop Daniel, joined by the children of the parish’s St. Andrew’s School of Religion, offered a symbolic act of living hope: a “Tree of Life” was planted in the churchyard. Adorned with blue and yellow ribbons - symbols of prayer, solidarity, and the undying spirit of Ukraine - the tree stands as a living monument: to the memory of the lost, to the resilience of the survivors, and to the commitment of new generations to safeguard God’s creation.

The day’s commemoration continued as Archbishop Daniel, in profound reverence, visited the burial sites of Metropolitan John Theodorovich - the first Primate of the UOC of the USA - and the many bishops and clergy who served and sacrificed for the growth of the Church. Standing amid these silent witnesses of faith, His Eminence offered heartfelt prayers, recalling that the same spirit that bore Chornobyl’s tragedy with dignity also built the foundations of Ukrainian Orthodoxy in the diaspora.

The tragedy of Chornobyl offers more than just a historical memory; it stands as a living parable for our world today. Archbishop Daniel’s words echoed with urgency and hope:

"Chornobyl reminds us:
Power must serve life, not dominate it.
Technology must be guided by morality.
Creation must be protected, not exploited.
When we heal creation, we heal the wounds of Christ Himself.
And when we stand for truth, even against the storms of destruction, we bear witness to the Resurrection that has conquered death."

Today, the sacred soil of Ukraine bleeds anew, not from invisible radiation but from the visible horrors of war - missiles, tanks, occupation, and genocide. Once again, the sacred tapestry of Ukraine’s land is torn. Once again, the mystical body of creation cries out.

But as the faithful sang at the Divine Liturgy, and as the Church proclaims boldly: "Christ is Risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and upon those in the tombs bestowing life!" In the face of evil, the Ukrainian nation clings to the unconquerable hope of the Resurrection.

As we mark this somber anniversary, let us lift up fervent prayers for the well-being of the people of Ukraine, for peace, for justice, and for the healing of all creation. Let us remember in prayer:

• The countless victims of Chornobyl
• Those still suffering from its aftereffects
• The brave defenders of Ukraine today
• The innocent lives torn by war and exile
• The natural world - God’s sacred creation - groaning under the weight of sin and violence

Let us dedicate ourselves anew to the work of healing, rebuilding, and sanctifying - standing boldly against the forces of death and destruction with the weapons of faith, hope, and love.

For as long as the Tree of Life stands at St. Andrew’s - and as long as the Cross of Christ towers over the world - we know this truth: Death shall never have the final word.

Духовний Осередок УПЦ США ​​молитовно відзначає 39-ту річницю Чорнобильської ядерної катастрофи

З Божою благодаттю, Українська Православна Церква Сполучених Штатів Америки зібралася в урочистій молитві та сповненому надії спогаді, відзначаючи 39-ту річницю Чорнобильської ядерної катастрофи – одного з найтрагічніших розділів сучасної історії людства та страждань українського народу.

Очолюючи священне поминання, Високопреосвященний Архієпископ Даниїл, духовний отець Західної єпархії та голова Консисторії, очолив Євхаристійну Божественну літургію в Українській православній церкві-памʼятнику Святого Андрія – духовному серці УПЦ США. Духовенство з сусідніх парафіяльних громад Нью-Йорка, Нью-Джерсі та Пенсильванії приєдналося до вірян у глибокій молитві за зцілення України, землі, яка досі глибоко поранена історичними лихами та жорстокою війною, розв'язаною російською агресією.

Майже через чотири десятиліття після того катастрофічного дня – 26 квітня 1986 року – коли вибухнув реактор №4 на Чорнобильській атомній електростанції, випустивши невидиму смерть у небо України та Європи, Церква стоїть стійкою: свідчить, пам’ятає та проголошує життя замість смерті, надію замість відчаю.

У своїй зворушливій проповіді архієпископ Даниїл розмірковував: «Улюблені брати та сестри у Христі. Сьогодні ми не лише згадуємо жахливу аварію; ми згадуємо заклик Бога – заклик до відповідальності, до опіки Божим створінням та до покаяння. Чорнобиль вчить нас, що коли людство зловживає дарами, довіреними йому – коли влада використовується без смирення, а технології без моралі – саме творіння стогне від болю. Однак навіть серед руйнування Боже милосердя сяє яскравіше за будь-яку темряву. Ми – народ Воскресіння – і навіть з попелу Чорнобиля може і має виникнути нове життя».

Протягом Літургії численні вірні підходили до Святої Чаші, причащаючись дорогоцінних Тіла і Крові Христових – акт зцілення, освячення та оновлення. У ці священні моменти шрами Чорнобиля, війни, вигнання та страждань поєднувалися з ранами Христа, щоб вони могли бути преображені Його Воскресінням.

Після завершення Богослужіння архієпископ Даниїл разом з дітьми парафіяльної школи Святого Андрія здійснив символічний акт живої надії: на церковному подвір’ї було посаджено «Дерево життя». Прикрашене синьо-жовтими стрічками – символами молитви, солідарності та невмирущого духу України – дерево стоїть як живий пам’ятник: пам’яті загиблих, стійкості тих, хто вижив, та відданості нових поколінь охороняти Боже творіння.

Вшанування цього дня продовжилося, коли архієпископ Даниїл з глибокою шаною відвідав місця поховання митрополита Івана Теодоровича – першого предстоятеля УПЦ США ​​– та багатьох єпископів та духовенства, які служили та жертвували собою заради зростання Церкви. Стоячи серед цих мовчазних свідків віри, Його Високопреосвященство підніс щирі молитви, нагадуючи, що той самий дух, який з гідністю переніс Чорнобильську трагедію, також збудував основи українського православ'я в діаспорі.

Трагедія Чорнобиля пропонує більше, ніж просто історичну пам'ять; вона є живою притчею для нашого сучасного світу. Слова архієпископа Даниїла лунали з невідкладністю та надією:

«Чорнобиль нагадує нам: технологія повинна служити життю, а не панувати над ним. Технології повинні керуватися мораллю. Творіння має бути захищене, а не експлуатоване. Коли ми зцілюємо творіння, ми зцілюємо рани Самого Христа. І коли ми стоїмо за правду, навіть проти штормів руйнування, ми свідчимо про Воскресіння, яке перемогло смерть».

Сьогодні священна земля України знову кровоточить не від невидимої радіації, а від видимих ​​жахів війни – ракет, танків, окупації та геноциду. Знову священний гобелен української землі розірваний. Знову містичне тіло творіння волає.

Але, як співали вірні на Божественній Літургії, і як сміливо проголошує Церква: «Христос воскрес із мертвих, смертю смерть подолав і тим, хто в гробах, життя дарував!» Перед обличчям зла українська нація тримається непереможної надії Воскресіння.

Відзначаючи цю похмуру річницю, піднесімо палкі молитви за благополуччя народу України, за мир, за справедливість і за зцілення всього творіння. Згадаймо в молитві:

• Незліченних жертв Чорнобиля
• Тих, хто досі страждає від його наслідків
• Хоробрих захисників України сьогодні
• Невинні життя, розірвані війною та вигнанням
• Природний світ – священне Боже творіння – стогне під тягарем гріха та насильства

Присвятімо себе знову справі зцілення, відбудови та освячення – сміливо протистоячи силам смерті та руйнування зброєю віри, надії та любові.

Доки Дерево Життя стоїть біля Святого Андрія – і доки Хрест Христовий височіє над світом – ми знаємо цю істину: смерть ніколи не матиме останнього слова.
